Cleaning Tips For Your Patio Screen Door
Your home’s patio screen door serves a very important purpose by keeping insects and debris out of your home’s interior while allowing fresh outdoor air in. However, just like any other component in the home, your patio screen door needs to be properly maintained, which involves regular cleaning.
Here are some tips to thoroughly clean your patio screen door.
Arm Yourself With the Right Supplies
Gather up the appropriate tools and supplies, including a household cleaner, screwdriver, small scrub brush, a steel wool pad, old rags, lint-free cloth, and a vacuum cleaner. Spraying the screen with a hose will only get rid of surface dust and won’t get rid of grease or grime. If you would rather use a home-made cleaner, you can make it with one part water and one part ammonia mixed in a spray bottle.
Cleaning the Screen
To do a thorough job at cleaning the patio screen door, you will need to remove it completely from the opening. This is easier than it might sound, and involves loosening the screws with the screwdriver. Make sure to set the screws down somewhere so you will be able to easily find them. Make sure that you are careful and gentle with the screen because it can be flimsy. Lie it down on a clean flat surface that has been lined with clean, old towels.
Vacuum both sides of the screen to remove any loose dirt, and spray the cleaning solution all over the screen. Let the cleaner sit on the screen for a few minutes, then wipe it down with a clean cloth. Dry the screen and let it sit to air dry completely.
Cleaning the Roller and Tracks
In addition to the screen, don’t forget to clean the roller and tracks as well. Use a small scrub brush to loosen up the debris and vacuum up the loose dirt. Use the steel wool to scrub off any debris that is harder to get off, and use the cleaner and cloth to get rid of any remaining dirt and allow it to dry completely. Finally, apply some lubricant to allow the frame to easily slide in and out of place.
Take the roller and tension spring and soak them in the cleaner for a few minutes, then wipe them down with a clean cloth. Allow them to completely dry for about half an hour. Spray them with a lubricant, replace all parts, then re-install the screen.
